Paranormal Lit

Two books I have read and been excited about are Paranormal State: My Journey into the Unknown by Ryan Buell and Seeking Spirits: The Lost Cases of the Paranormal Research Society by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson of the show Ghost Hunters. I was expecting something different from each of these books, but they surprised me in that they are more similar than I would have thought. Paranormal State airs on A&E and focuses more on the psychology of the cases and employs vetted psychics. Ghost Hunters airs on SyFy (nee SciFi) and focuses more on the science of debunking while steering clear of psychics and sensitives.
These books reveal that they do not stick to these stereotypes. Jason and Grant do on occasion have to seek the help of a priest and have had their fair share of paranormal experiences not very unlike the ones seen on Paranormal State. Ryan does not welcome any psychics into the fold without having them prove themselves. While they do not always get everything right, they do tend to "hit" more than miss so that's why they can be more or less trusted. Ghost Hunters used to have demonologists Carl and Keith Johnson on the team, but as a general rule they do not like to allow psychics on the team.
While these books are not perfect tens, both are enlightening reads that take you behind the scenes of cases that did or did not make it to air. My only disappointments were that some people aren't what they seemed to be, but on the other hand my faith was renewed in other people. They are definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of either show. While Jason and Grant do not mention Buell and his friends, he makes references to them, specifically about the Johnson brothers and the Shannon Sylvia debacle (Shannon joined Ghost Hunters International AFTER the Paranormal Research Society investigated her home, but for some reason the GHI episodes aired before the Paranormal State one with her in it).
Grant has since left Ghost Hunters to stay home with his family. After alleged demonic attacks on the Paranormal State team (Buell’s team, not the new class), there have been no more new episodes. Just like Criss Angel Mindfreak, Ghost Lab, and Paranormal Cops, it seems to have fallen off the face of the planet even though more episodes were promised. Oh well. I just hope they’re okay.
