Ami's Kryptonite
There are still subbed episodes of Sailor Moon I haven't seen because I haven't tracked down all of the ones the dub either skipped or just weren't aired in the U.S. I did find SuperS Plus featuring Ami, but I already knew most of that information from reading Meet Sailor Mercury: Ice (in fact, I'm surprised that the other girls didn't get specials with the info from their books, unless they did and I just haven't found them yet; then again, the book had screen caps from this special so what the hell?). This special made me afraid of her. She is scary when being super competitive at studying and being afraid of love letters to the point of paralysis (at least until she saw the evil monster and defeated it with a vengeance before Usagi, Mamoru, and Chibiusa had a chance to transform - they just kinda stood in the doorway and did nothing). That and the epic freakouts really turned me off to her even though she is still my favorite character. I used to like her much more when she did stuff like shamelessly indulge in the same "nonsense" as the other girls, like bringing her swimsuit on their trip to visit Makoto in the mountains during her training or becoming one of the first to join the Starlights' fan club or eating a bunch of cake and visiting a magical childhood land of sweets and stuff. Her behavior in this special, though...I'd rather forget it. The only reason I ever studied was so I could get good enough grades to get my mom's family off my back and get into college and get a good job (all things I've failed at since grades aren't everything, the economy sucks, and people have rejected me repeatedly in a very heartless manner - and my mom's family now looks down on me more than ever). Her saying there's no such thing as love while she's studying was just stupid. At that rate she would burn herself out if all she did was study and briefly take naps, maybe eat a sandwich. And the whole time I kept thinking...what about Greg? Then in PGSM she's shipped with Nephrite (started with her as Dark Mercury but continued when Nephrite became human.) WTFH?
Speaking of PGSM, after listening to the soundtrack uninterrupted for the first time with a critical ear, I've chosen the best songs from it, one per Scout (except Venus who gets two because most of the songs on the soundtrack are hers to begin with). The honorable mention goes to "Friend," which is sung by all five girls. It's better than "Friends Forever" by Puffy AmiYumi or Vitamin C. The best Sailor Moon song is "Oubaareinbou Tsuatete," which I had difficulty translating as "Over the Rainbow." Which is still better Engrish than in "Here We Go Shinjiru Chikara." The best Sailor Jupiter song was tough to choose, but "Miracle Dance Night" ultimately beat out "Lovely Yell." The actress playing Makoto is a really good singer. The best Sailor Mars song is "Sakura Fubuki," her debut song as Reiko Mars. The best Sailor Venus songs are "C'est la Vie" and "Romance," probably the best-known from the series other than the theme "Kirari Sailor Dream." But the best Sailor Mercury song and best song overall IMO is "Mi Amor." Not only is Sailor Mercury my favorite, but this song is also in Spanish and Japanese, the two foreign languages I studied. "Yakusoku" or "Promise" was all right, but this one was much stronger.
If I had to rank my favorite Sailor Scouts after Mercury, it would go Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn.
