Double Feature #2

Tangled: A retelling of Rapunzel by Disney that makes some sense, but as Nostalgia Chick claims, it did rip off Dreamworks a little to do so - "Rise of the Eyebrow," male protagonist making eyes like Puss in Boots, etc. However, it is definitely a Disney film even though it's computer animated instead of the hand-drawn animation of Princess and the Frog. In other words, it is not Shrek’s Rapunzel. Rapunzel is kidnapped by a witch named Gothel the day she was born. Gothel raised her as her own so that she alone could benefit from the girl's magical hair - watch it if you want context - which has healing powers, and she can't cut it or else it stops being magic. On her eighteenth birthday, Rapunzel sets out to find the truth helped by a thief who incidentally stole her tiara from the palace. Tangled was good, but it would have been even better if Gothel really was her mother and it was a struggle between the two of them for her freedom. I guess that's kind of what they ended up doing for Brave, but I didn't like that movie (the two different story ideas cobbled together just ruined it for me).

Coraline: An Americanization of the British YA novel, starring Dakota Fanning as an eleven-year-old like an older Lilo whom she played in Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has A Glitch. I didn't expect to like it but I did, although it is very strange and nonsensical at times - probably explained better in the book but I haven't read it. Coraline's family moves into a subdivided pink house, but her parents are too busy and unfond of mud to plant a garden with her. Upon exploring the house she finds a secret door hidden behind the wallpaper, where she finds an alternate reality. However, it's a trap by a creature referred to as "the other mother" or "the beldam."

I would recommend watching these movies with your mother...or at least calling your mother to tell her you love her after seeing them for yourself.
